DIY floating bed

Yesterday I shared the second part of our small bedroom transformation. You can check that out here. If you missed the first post of us sanding down our original hardwoods, you can check that post out here. Scot and I kept going back and forth on what kind of bed we wanted to purchase for our youngest son. Before starting this room we sold all of his furniture on Facebook marketplace. This was the old bed he had, and he loved it so much, he just needed something that could grow with him a little more. Today we're going to show you how to easily build a difficult custom bed frame using wood from The Home Depot.

Tools needed for this build:

  1. Miter saw

  2. Nail gun

  3. Screws

  4. Drill

Material list:

  1. 2x4's

  2. 2x6's

Cut list:

This tutorial is for a full size bed frame. Each mattress varies, so alter the cuts for your specific size.

  • (2) 2x4's @ 74.5 inches

  • (5) 2x4's @ 50.75 inches

  • (2) 2x6's @ 61 inches

  • (2) 2x6's @ 38.25 inches

  • (1) 2x6 @ 58 inches

Make your first four cuts with the 2x4's and lay them in a rectangle like pictured above. You'll notice the top and bottom 2x4's are located on the INSIDE of the outside 2x4 boards.

Next you'll cut three 2x4's and place them in the center of the rectangle, spaced evenly, like pictured above.

Grab your drill and screws and secure all 2x4 boards together.

Then you'll grab your 2x6 boards for the platform that will go underneath the one you just built. Place your 2x6 boards under the top platform to gauge where your inset is going to be. You don't want to see your bottom platform from the side of the bed.

Next you'll install your last 2x6 support in the center of the bottom platform. This is your 58 inch cut.

Then you'll be to stack the top platform onto the bottom platform, like pictured above.

We added a few braces for the cantilever corners using 2x4's and screws.

Before placing the underlayment on top of the platform, we secured both platforms to the studs in the wall to ensure the bed wouldn't move. You can sit on the edge of the bed perfectly fine and it doesn't budge. Safety first.

Finally we measured and cut down a piece of underlayment from The Home Depot. We secured the underlayment using our finishing nail gun. This is what the mattress will sit on.

The underlayment isn't wide enough for the bed frame, so we used the excess and cut two smaller pieces on the right side by the wall.

The after

We are so excited for how the diy floating bed frame turned out. Not documented was when we installed the 1x6 oak boards on the sides of the 2x4's. If you choose to do the same, we attached these using our nail gun. You'll want to make sure you protect the oak boards with poly prior to moving the mattress back over. I applied two solid coats, sanding lightly in between.
