One Room Challenge Fall 2019- Week 6 FINAL REVEAL

Well, well, well! We have officially made it to the end of our SECOND One Room Challenge, and to say we are beyond happy with what we accomplished would be the understatement of the year. If you guys remember, or have been following us for any length of time, then you know for our first One Room Challenge we transformed our master bathroom. We literally spent 6 weeks rebuilding our bathroom from the ground up, and man did it leave us with all the emotions. It was definitely a roller coaster ride, so this time around it has been so much more relaxed and enjoyable. I feel like things just came together so naturally and organically. There wasn’t a single moment of stress or arguments over this room transformation (can’t say the same for our master bathroom makeover ;) ).

Let’s take a trip down memory lane shall we? Let’s go back to the very beginning of what our master bedroom looked like before we started transforming it.

There’s a few things I want to mention about this before space. The orange floors were hands down my least favorite thing about this entire room. The second least favorite thing was the atrocious black wall behind our bed. (That was totally painted because everyone was doing it on Instagram. Worst mistake, EVER!) Our room was entirely too small for such a dark wall, and it always competed with my relaxed and serene vision of our master bedroom. The fan? Need I say more. I mean look at the poor thing. It’s sad…and you know it’s sad, haha. The curtains weren’t awful, but I’ve definitely been veering away from all gray tones for the most part.

So in week one we shared our mood board with everyone. I was SO proud of this mood board. It’s ultimately what allowed us to have such a strong start when it came to transforming this room. Did we stick to everything we put on our mood board? We didn’t. However, I love our finished product SO MUCH MORE than our mood board and that’s the best feeling! Here’s a quick glance back at our mood board.

The original plan was to do some type of paneling behind our bed. You guys know I’ve been obsessed with slat walls for the longest time. We did a slat ceiling in our kiddos bathroom a few years ago, and it’s still one of my favorite DIY’s to date. We didn’t end up doing a paneled wall, however we did end up incorporating a slat feature, because it was 100% necessary. We also didn’t end up using this rug, even though I was OBSESSED with it! Pretty much the only thing we ended up purchasing off our mood board was our bed frame, and guys it’s amazing! If you are a fellow minimalist and love clean lines and low bed frames you have to order this! We have a king and it was just over $100 ($109!), and amazon prime!

The first thing we started with on our room were sanding down our floors. We rented two sanders from our local Home Depot and went to town! We have never sanded floors before, but after receiving a quote of $5k+ we were going to LEARN! We watched a couple youtube tutorials and got to work. It was way easier than we anticipated and so worth doing ourselves! Here’s a shot of the floors once they were sanded!

I mean this photo alone calls for a side by side before and after. This is when I KNEW with confidence all would be ok even if it didn’t work out because guys…I mean come on.

IS THAT NOT AN INSANE DIFFERENCE?!?!?! Anyways, once the floors were sanded we were able to start tackling cosmetic stuff. The first thing we did after the floors was paint over the black wall with the same paint that you see on the left wall (also the same paint throughout our entire home!).

From there we removed our window trim, replaced our windows, added new MDF trim around the window casings, and upgraded our fan to this fan. It’s also the same one we put in the boys room . Next we started a game plan of utilizing the space we had to the best of it’s ability. We knew we wanted more storage in the room (not in a dresser), and settled on moving our credenza that was in our family room to our master bedroom.

That credenza consisted of Ikea cabinets and a track. It was extremely easy to move, and it’s actually getting used for practical reasons now as opposed to just hoarding broken and abandoned toys. It now holds all of our clothes! Speaking of clothes…if you remember from week one this is what our closet looked like…

I know, I knowwww. Guys, I know. This space was SO bad, so ugly, so scary. To be 100% transparent and honest, our closet has sat like this for a solid two years. I removed our original bi-fold doors because they were falling apart and squishing toddler fingers, and they haven’t seen doors…UNTIL NOW. For our closet doors we opted to build our own. We thought this would be more beneficial for our small reach in closet, and would allow us to have the aesthetic that we wanted in the finished room. Here’s a behind the scenes of the making of our closet doors.

The most beautiful wood on the planet, and I am so glad this is what we decided to do. We installed them on a track in our reach in closet, and guys…THEY’RE GOOD. SO good! If you are in the same predicament we were and have the same love of all things modern and minimal, you must add this to your project to-do list! I would definitely say it’s a beginners project!

Once the windows, window trim, fan, closet doors and credenza were installed it was go time for the building blocks of this room. First we, read I (super proud of this, haha) put together our new bed frame.

We’ve been blessed with extremely low ceilings, so our bed has pretty much always been on the floor. Our old bed surround was made out of wood from Home Depot and just hid our box springs that were…on the ground. So when we were on the hunt for the perfect bed frame, we knew eliminating our box springs would be our best bet. (We plan on selling them, however they’re currently being stored in storage bags in the basement for now) These are the box spring storage bags we purchased in case you’re in the market. Amazon prime and two come in a pack!

Once the bed frame was put together we were able to start layering. You know what that means, it was RUG TIME! The original rug that was on our mood board literally gave me all the heart eyes, however we had a slight game change and I’m not mad about it. The rug we ended up going with was black and was the perfect contrast against our now white oak hardwood floors!

Above to the left in the photo are the hanging credenza cabinets. The nightstand was built from leftover wood that we used on our closet! I had been eyeballing a handful of nightstands, but I just couldn’t commit to spending $300-400 on a nightstand. I upcycled legs from a previous project. You can grab these legs for under $4 HERE. I literally just picked dimensions and ran with it. We installed these magnets so that the front would stay on properly and they worked like a charm.

I also moved these Ribba Ikea frames into our room. They were in the boys room, but everytime they wrestled they would move, and ultimately one fell off the wall and broke…which resulted in me having to hot glue it back together!

So moving right into week five, we didn’t really provide you guys with much of an update, because there really wasn’t much to update you on! In fact…here’s our week five blog update here. I wasn’t kidding guys…like how awful am I? Haha.

HOWEVER.

This entire post leads us to the BIG FINAL REVEAL OF OUR SECOND ONE ROOM CHALLENGE! For the past 6 weeks we have been pouring our hearts into this space. We wanted our room to feel serene, calm, luxurious, relaxing, an oasis! We had a strict vision when it came to using neutral colors and tones, including wood. We now walk into our room and feel so at home. This space is 100% US!

ARE YOU GUYS READY?!?! DO YOU WANT TO SEE THIS ROOM REVEAL??

I officially give you our FINAL REVEAL of the One Room Challenge Fall 2019!

Now I want to personally thank our two AMAZING sponsors we had when it came to transforming this room!

The first company that we are OBSESSED with is Sol Organics! We have their Classic Bedding Bundle in Sand on our bed, and their White Linen Duvet (both in a King size).

We have worked with Sol Organics before and guys I have to rave about them, and their values and mission as a company. For one they have second-party certification by FLO, GOTS, Oeko Tex and Fair Trade. They only use 100% certified ORGANIC materials! While this is extremely important to us, we also have to touch base on the fact that there’s absolutely ZERO child labor in this company. Their factory partners make a living wage. They’re committed to eradicating child labor. That is a company we can stand firmly behind and 100% support! We highly encourage you to check them out and invest in your home and sheets. Know where they’re coming from, and have that peace of mind! Shop their line of products HERE! Follow them on Instagram HERE!

The second company we would love to recognize is A1HC SHOP! They were gracious enough to send us their certified organic down alternative microfiber duvet insert! This thing is a beast and is SO comfortable! If you’re a fan of weighted blankets, then this is the comforter insert for you! I love the slight heaviness of it, and the small details that make a HUGE impact. For instance the 8 built in corner loops that allow you to secure this into your duvet cover! That is a game changer. If you’ve ever tried to put a comforter of any kind in a duvet cover than you know how key it is to have those ties to keep it from moving/sliding around! It also has a box stitch design which doesn’t allow the fill to move around! You can machine wash this bad boy in cold water and tumble dry on low! We highly recommend this comforter for your duvet! You can pick one up for yourself HERE, we have it in a king size!

We are so excited that we’re finally able to share a final reveal! Make sure you check out the 19 amazing featured designers who participated in the Fall 2019 One Room Challenge, along with the other amazing bloggers and instagrammers who participated! Looking forward to seeing everyone in the Spring!
