Adding texture to your thrifted finds
When it comes to home decor, you do not have to go into debt creating a piece you love. In fact some of my favorite pieces in our home have been found at our local thrift stores. I would even say if I were to show a few close friends and family members different items, they would guess I spent alot of money on them. Those are my favorite transformations, friends! Low cost, big impact!
Today I wanted to share how I recreate, or upcycle if you will, my (more specifically) thrifted vases. Pots, planters, and vases are so versatile when it comes to design. I’ve had the vase, pictured above, in three different rooms in our home. The vase I’m going to be sharing today cost me $1.33 at the thrift store. The product I used to bring it back to life cost me $6. That’s pretty phenomenal right? This makeover took me all of five minutes to complete and left me speechless with the results.
First I wanted to share one of my favorite spaces this vase has been in, our master bedroom. I used this vase in our Fall One Room Challenge master bedroom final reveal and it was an absolute statement piece, that brought it’s own uniqueness to the room.
This was before I added texture to the thrifted vase. The vase itself was an amazing color for our calm and neutral master bedroom, however it needed a little something. I was browsing inspiration photos and knew that it was missing the texture element I was craving.
Here’s what the vase looked like after I added the texture to it.
So I went to my local Home Depot store and browsed the spray paint aisle when I came across the winner. It was this textured spray paint.
I wanted to share a few tips with you if you also plan on using this spray paint for an upcoming project. It was trial and error, because this spray paint does NOT have the same consistency as regular spray paint, so make sure you do the following:
Shake it vigorously before using. I know all spray paint says to shake vigorously, but this one is heavy and textured and will need to consistently be shaken as you work.
Hold back at least 8 inches from whatever you’re spraying. This textured spray paint comes out faster than regular spray paint and has a tendency to pool quicker. Holding it too close to your item will resulting in major drips, which will need to be fixed.
This spray paint doesn’t last a very long time. Once you open, shake, and use make sure you use it all in one sitting. It’s thick and will clog the sprayer, so don’t use, put away, and then try and use again.
Dries relatively quickly (especially if spraying in the sun), so you’ll be able to move it inside with little to no odor!
