One Room Challenge Fall 2019- Week Two Before and current progress photos

The absolute hardest part of the One Room Challenge for me is posting the before photos. As much as I LOVE a good before and after, I’m cringing at what our ‘master bedroom’ currently looks like. Let me give you a little history about our room, and why we’re lacking closet doors, among other things.

A few years ago I removed our 1963 original bi-folding doors because they weren’t in the best condition. At the time we had two younger toddlers, which also posed an issue with fingers getting squished in between the doors. Unfortunately I had no grand plan before ripping them out or else I probably would’ve done things a little differently. Nonetheless here we are still sporting a closet without doors and my LEAST favorite thing in the world, physically seeing clutter. I know our closet isn’t necessarily that ‘cluttered’, I just prefer doors on everything. Ha!

We could actually play a game of Ispy when it comes to our room, like where are the ceiling fan globes you ask?! I took those off, too. I’m telling you guys I’m the queen of demo and instant gratification. Those two combined are probably the worst combination when it comes to home improvement. The ceiling fan won’t be staying in this space, so I’m not going to stress over that too much.

Our box springs are currently on the floor with the mattress on top. We built the DIY wood surround so you couldn’t see that that was our current situation. We actually, believe it or not, prefer a lower bed in our bedroom because we don’t have high ceilings so a lower bed makes our room appear larger. As you can see though, we have a smaller room than most ‘master bedrooms’, which doesn’t leave much room for anything extra, like night stands.

We put our Ikea dresser in our closet to save space in our already small bedroom, but then ended up having to build a make shift desk out of leftover materials until the office space is finished in the basement. Guys, our room is just all types of bad. So many things that I will not miss. Speaking of not missing things, let’s just go ahead and discuss the orange in the room.

Whoops, I mean our floors. There isn’t ac actual orange in the room, but for some reason the previous owners family thought it would be a good idea to stain and poly them this color. Hands down the least favorite thing about our home for me. They ruin the entire aesthetic and literally don’t work regardless of what you do, besides completely desaturating them in photoshop. ;)

Here you’ll see my awesome make shift temporary desk area where I edit all of my photography sessions and blog posts. After taking these photos we moved our Target mirror to the boys room because we didn’t have plans of keeping it in here, although I already miss it.

Andddd the biggest eye sore of it all, friends. The closet. The very open, exposed drywall closet. It’s sad. HOWEVER, it will be so pretty once it’s finished! We have grand plans for a very affordable, practical, and DIY friendly fix for this little corner. We’re excited to see it come to life.

Now that you’ve seen extremely embarrassing before photos let’s jump right into our to-do list for this room so you can get a feel for what all we will be tackling in this space. Overall it doesn’t seem that stressful, especially in comparison to our master bathroom transformation, however there will be a lot of firsts for us in this space, like sanding the floors!

TO DO LIST

  • Clear out entire room and sand the floors

  • Remove ceiling fan and replace with a modern fan

  • Get rid of make shirt bed frame and upgrade

  • Install closet system

  • Install closet doors

  • Replace both original windows with new ones

  • Focal wall behind bed

  • Figure out nightstand situation

  • Maybe desk area still? That’s still undecided

  • Bring in all the pretty little details (bedding, rug, lighting etc)

Now let’s all ohh and ahh together on these drastically different current progress photos. The floors have been sanded down, and that alone has been an INSANE change.
