How to make a DIY cloud light

We created a DIY arch built in bed for our daughter's One Room Challenge bedroom transformation. Since her built in bed used to be a reach in closet, there is a hardwired light on the ceiling. However, I wanted to create something unique and different for her room. I was scrolling on Pinterest and came across these amazing cloud lights and knew they would fit perfectly in this space. To find more inspiration simply type in "diy cloud light" into your Pinterest search bar! Today I'm going to show you guys how to make a cloud light using materials I purchased from Walmart!

These clouds were so incredibly easy to make. You can find all of the materials for this do it yourself project at most stores, but I purchased all of them from Walmart! If you want to learn how to make a cloud light, purchase the materials listed below.

Materials:

1. 10 inch round white paper lanterns
2. Hot glue gun
3. Glue sticks
4. Poly fil
5. Fishing line
6. Dowel
7. Puck lights
8. Conduit strap

How to make:

First, grab your paper lantern and assemble them. All you have to do is pull it open and then insert the metal piece that comes with it.

Next grab your poly fil and hot glue gun. All you have to do is hot pieces of the poly fil directly to the paper lantern.

I did really small sections of hot glue as I didn't want it to dry too quickly before applying the poly fil.

Here's what your paper lantern will look like once it's completely covered in poly fil.

Paper lanterns:

You can purchase different size paper lanterns. I purchased four 10 inch white paper lanterns. Here's what all four paper lanterns looked like once they were covered in poly fil. You'll notice the paper lanterns came with a white string attached to the metal piece. We didn't use this string. We replaced it with fishing line so that you wouldn't see them when they were hung up.

This is what they would look like if you used the strings that came with the paper lanterns. We didn't want to see the visible string when it was hanging from the ceiling. You totally can if you want to, though! It's personal preference.

Since our Walmart only had four 10 inch paper lanterns in stock, Scot and I put them all on the dowel to work on placement. We knew that because we used all the same size paper lanterns, we would be adding additional poly fil once they were hung up to give them more of an organic cloud appearance. You can avoid this by purchasing different size paper lanterns.

Scot did a special fishing line knot to secure the clouds to the dowel.

Adding the puck lights:

To add the puck lights, we simply applied hot glue to the back of the light and glued them to the inside side of the paper lantern. Keep in mind this will make the paper lanterns slightly lean because of the weight. Don't worry which side of the paper lantern you install the puck light on because overall it won't impact the light distribution once you turn them on.

This is how the clouds looked once we attached the dowel to the ceiling. We used a conduit strap in the center and it was plenty strong enough to hold it securely in place.

We definitely wanted it to have more an organic cloud feel and look, so we grabbed our bag of poly fil and started adding some to both the ceiling and the clouds.

Here's what the clouds looked like once we filled them in and turned on the lights.
