One Room Challenge Spring 2020- Week one

Then you already know that Scot and I are tackling our hallway for this Spring’s One Room Challenge, and are WE EXCITED or what! Having an open floor plan in our home has it’s own pros and cons! The pros is that we can all hang out and mingle with one another in close quarters. A con is that we have to stare at these eyesores until we transform them. And when I say eyesores I am 1000% referring to our BRIGHT ORANGE FLOORS!

You might recall we sanded down our floors in last years Fall One Room Challenge and it was a GAME CHANGER for our design. The lights floors are more our style and are cohesive with our aesthetic. Today I am going to share a few before photos of our narrow hallway, the progress we made on our hallway makeover today, and what the game plan is for the remainder of the One Room Challenge! I know a hallway might not seem like the most exciting space to transform, however it used on a daily basis, all day long, and hands down the most looked at!

We’re hoping to inspire you to tackle your own hallway in your home! Before moving on to the before photos make sure you’re following us on our social media accounts so that you don’t miss out on our behind the scenes or progress posts!!

ALRIGHT! Let’s get to the before photos shall we?

So as you can see we have a semi long and very narrow hallway! I installed that Ikea Pax wardrobe at the end of the hallway last year and it has saved us in regards to the extra storage we so desperately needed! The drywall on the right side of the hallway used to have pine board and batten on it. It is pretty damaged from the removal, so we have plans to change that wall!

The open wall on the left of the hallway used to be closed off, but we removed the load bearing wall and transformed it…

The light above the stairs has been there since the house was built in 1963. We still haven’t removed it! We disconnected the power to it when we removed the wall! We plan on replacing it with a brighter light! Our attic ladder is also broken, along with the original trim around it, so we are on the hunt for a sturdy one for easy attic access!

The two doorways you see are where two heavy original wood doors used to be when we moved in! I always love throwing in “move in” photos for a good visual! Here’s what the view of the hallway looked like when we moved in six years ago.

See that door in the background. That was our basement door! Here’s an original of our hallway! You can see one of the two door knobs in the bottom right corner.

So we haven’t really finished our mood board for this space yet, but I’ll share it as soon as we do! We’re still trying to finalize our design for the hallway and want to really take our time and make sure we hit all the points we want to hit!

HOWEVER today we did manage to make a little progress! We started tackling this hallway by sanding down the orange floors! I was extremely optimistic and thought I could sand the entire thing by hand. An hour later and only two feet in Scot walked into my tarped up war zone and said, “I’ll be right back Bridgett, I’m going to rent a sander!” I was honestly trying to save money and use it somewhere else, but I’m glad Scot made that call because my neck, my back… you get it. I’m SORE. Haha

GOALS FOR THE HALLWAY:

We want our hallway to feel cozy and inviting. We don’t want it to just be a “meh” part of our home. It’s apart of our open floor plan, so we want it to highlight the other side of the house. Will we go dark? Will we experiment with different paint colors in this space over the next 6 weeks?? WHO KNOWS! Maybe? Am I already losing my mind?

Regardless, we’re so glad you guys are here! To celebrate the beginning of our Spring 2020 One Room Challenge, here’s a progress photo of our sanded down floors! I kept the rugs, but not sure they’ll make the cut for the final reveal! We shall see!

Isn’t it SO crazy how different the hallway looks already JUST from sanding down the orange floors!? I’m telling you, hallways might be boring, but this transformation is going to be SO GOOD!!
