DIY Outdoor Chair

Today we’re going to be sharing the easiest and most affordable way to make your own DIY outdoor chair! We’ve been trying to hunt down the perfect patio furniture for a few months now, but it was going to be a huge investment, so we decided to build our own outdoor chairs on a budget! We recently added horizontal railings to our open front porch. If you missed that post you can click the button below! Keep reading for the chair tutorial and material list!

Yesterday we sprayed the horizontal railings on the front porch to match the exterior of the house! They look SO beautiful, and the front porch vision is coming together nicely.

There are SO many DIY tutorials out there for furniture, but we promise this one is going to be the easiest and simplest tutorial out there! It took us 20 minutes to build each chair! These DIY patio chairs are so easy that we consider this a beginner build! This build allowed us to build an outdoor chair for $14! FOURTEEN DOLLARS! Isn’t that insane? Compare that to the $199+ price tag of outdoor furniture.

So there were a few characteristic traits we wanted in our front porch chairs. We wanted the following criteria:

  • Modern

  • Clean lines

  • Deep seats

  • Simple design

  • Affordable

  • Custom

And I’d say we achieved and hit every bullet on our list! Let’s get to the DIY outdoor chair tutorial shall we? BRACE YOURSELF, because this is E-A-S-Y!!!!!

CUT LIST:

  • 4 @ 24 1/2 (LEGS)

  • 2 @ 30 1/4 (TOP PIECES)

  • 9 @ 27 1/4 (SIDES + BOTTOM SUPPORT)

  • 5 @ 25 (BACK SUPPORT + FRONT PIECES)

20 CUTS TOTAL! THAT’S IT! EASY PEASY RIGHT?

If you’re more of a visual person Scot drew up a very simple drawing showing you where each piece of wood on the cut list goes! RED=25” YELLOW= 27 1/4” BLUE= 30 1/4” GREEN= 24 1/2”

We tried to calculate the cuts so that you would have as little waste as possible! We had a little leftover, but it’s as good as it’s going to get with the length of the boards! So to make it easy I included what cuts we made on each of the 7 boards from the material list! This also allows you to mark your boards with a pencil so you don’t forget what cuts you’re on!

CUTS:

FIRST 2X3 BOARD:

  • TWO 24 1/2

  • ONE 30 1/4

SECOND 2X3 BOARD:

  • TWO 24 1/2

  • ONE 30 1/4

THIRD 2X3 BOARD:

  • THREE 27 1/4

FOURTH 2X3 BOARD:

  • THREE 27 1/4

FIFTH 2X3 BOARD:

  • THREE 27 1/4

SIXTH 2X3 BOARD:

  • THREE 25 in

SEVENTH 2X3 BOARD:

  • TWO 25 in

The final size of our DIY outdoor chair is 30 1/4” deep, 30” wide, 26” tall!

Here’s a visual for 2x3 cut list…

Now that your cuts are made you’ll want to grab your kreg jig and make your pocket holes!

YOU WILL ONLY KREG JIG YOUR 25” & 27 1/4” BOARDS!!

ASSEMBLE YOUR SIDE FRAMES!

We measured 10” from the ground for our first 2x3 side piece! This will be your seat height! You’ll also notice that the bottom piece has visible kreg holes! We rotated the top two side pieces and used the kreg jig underneath them! The top pieces are secured from the top using deck screws! NOTE: PRE-DRILL BEFORE YOU USE YOUR SCREWS SO YOUR WOOD DOESN’T SPLIT!

BUILD TWO OF THESE SIDE FRAMES BELOW!

Once your two side frames are complete you’ll want to then secure your four back pieces (25 in) and one front piece (25 in), and three 27 1/4 bottom supports (where your cushion will sit!)

Here is what your chair will look like once it’s completely assembled!

Are you guys ready for the styled after photos??? These DIY outdoor chairs turned out SO good and way better than we could have envisioned! They cost us $14 each to make, which allowed for a bigger cushion budget! We went with a neutral (big shocker) cushion to match the aesthetic of the porch and we’re obsessed with them!

This spot is Scot’s new favorite place to get his work done!

  • Coffee: Check.

  • Comfortable chair: Check.

  • Warm sunshine: Check

  • People watching: Check

  • Quarantine mustache: Check

I am OBSESSED with the lines from the horizontal porch slats we installed! Every morning we have this gorgeous view!

What do you guys think?!?!

We couldn’t be more thrilled about our new DIY outdoor chairs! In fact, we’re already planning to build more for our backyard deck seating, too!
